How Lincoln Plans To Relaunch In A New Age Of Luxury

PSFK recently attended a panel discussion on the luxury sector and how Ford’s premium brand would leverage the trends there. Surrounded by industry consultants, the best commentary came from those having to really sell in the market – namely the Chief Designer for Lincoln, Max Wolff, and the CMO, Jim Farley.

Next year Lincoln will reveal new car lines and Jim told the audience of journalists and writers that they don’t want to follow the German model of luxury – they wanted to be an independent brand that’s not for everyone. Three themes that emerged in the talk were the importance of customer connection, technology allows better design and the brand as magician:

The Importance of Customer ConnectionThe panel agreed that customer service was at an all time low but brands should never underestimate the importance of a high touch environment. The problem facing brands like Lincoln today is that customers would rather talk to friends about a purchase than deal with a sales person. Dealers are strategic partners, Jim said. Max agreed that they need to create a experiences where the customer meets the brand.

Technology Allows Better Design
Jim, who says that his grandfather was employee number 348 at Ford in the 1920s, told that audience that the luxury car market is in a zero-defect mode: brands make sure everything works and that this allows great throughput and efficiency but “conjurs no joy.”

Max, who says his job is to create the aesthetic interpretation of the Lincoln brand, talked about how technology innovation frees his team to do something different. “Because the new cars will have electronic shift, there are less mechanics and that makes space where we can create scultpture in the car. He also talked about how the graphical style of dashboard and other interfaces could be customized with downloads post-purchase.

The Brand As Magician
Max added that luxury is something that you want. You’ve got to say, “I want that.” Jim added that the automotive industry has lost site of luxury but there’s room for a brand like Lincoln with unique roots to position itself for independent minded people.

Lincoln plans to bring back a sense of the old world that you might get from visiting a tailor who knows you and has a social relationship with you. He explained that the original brand was designed to create unique personalized carriages and cars; but admitted that this was physically impossible in today’s market place. That said, Jim said they wanted to act like a magician where every customer feels like their car is unique to them. “Our customers want to be surprised, they want it to be personal. How to execute service and product to come across in an authentic way is going to be very hard but we have to do it.”

Local Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators conduct an array of activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races and other voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and concurrently generate toys and monetary donations.

5 Winter Driving Tips: How to stay safe in the snow

Though this doesn't necessarily apply to us Floridians, we thought it might be useful for those of you who may be traveling up north for the holidays!

It was the first big snowfall of the season and I was out driving on the freeway when it happened. I had been traveling carefully, unsure that my little sedan would be able to keep traction as the snow kept piling up, when a large SUV came flying out of nowhere, attempting to pass me as if the roads were dry. Just as the SUV had gotten ahead of me, the driver lost control. The vehicle spun wildly for a few seconds and then crashed horrifically into the median with a sickening crunch.

Somehow, the driver was unhurt. Many others, however, are not so lucky. Each and every winter, people are injured or killed because they are unprepared or overconfident on snowy, icy roads.

The following rules for driving safely in winter weather are not particularly difficult to follow and doing so will keep you much safer on snowy roads. Even if you are a veteran driver from a snow belt state and don't give venturing out in a blizzard much of a second thought, keeping these safety tips fresh in your mind can keep you on the road and in control.

1. Make sure you and your car are properly equipped before you leave.

Do a quick check of your vehicle before you hit the road. Make sure that your car has ample antifreeze, the windshield is clean and you have plenty of windshield washer fluid, the headlights are clean and in working order and the tires have tread and are properly inflated. Also, make sure to have your battery tested, to avoid being stranded in the cold with a car that won't start.

In addition to your vehicle's mechanical equipment, it's important to keep some extra items in the trunk or glove box in case of emergency. Equip your car with a flashlight and extra batteries, a first aid kit, warm clothes, and a blanket. Remember to have sunglasses in the car as well. It always amazes me how many people I see driving in the winter without them. The glare of the sun off of snow and ice can be more intense in the winter than it is in the summer.

One last thing to remember, perhaps the most important of all: Your cell phone.

2. Slow down and drive smoothly.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but even if you're driving an SUV or a four-wheel-drive truck, you cannot safely do 80 mph during a snowstorm. Four-wheel-drive may help your vehicle get going in the slushy stuff, but it's of no use when you're trying to steer or safely stop on a slippery road surface.

It is also important to avoid abrupt acceleration, braking and turns. Doing so can cause your vehicle to lose traction and can launch you into an uncontrollable skid, leading to a collision.

Driving too quickly is the main cause of accidents in winter conditions. Just be patient and accept the fact that it is going to take longer to arrive at your destination.

3. Do not tailgate.

It is important to remember that it takes a much longer distance to stop your vehicle in the snow or ice due to the greatly reduced traction, even with just a light covering on the road. You may think that the driver in front of you doing 35 mph on the freeway is going too slow and needs a reminder in the form of you riding their bumper, but doing so is dangerous. Be patient and stay back until it's safe to pass.

Tailgating often leads to accidents, especially if you are driving in stop-and-go traffic. If the car in front of you stops abruptly and you are following too closely, you can reflexively slam on the brakes and end up sliding into it. The resulting accident may be no more than a fender-bender, but having to deal with it on a busy road in the snow is certainly something that you want to avoid, especially if other cars are sliding around as well. Many serious accident injuries come from a second impact from another car after a seemingly trivial collision.

4. Do not use cruise control.

For some, driving with cruise control has become almost second nature. Sure, it prevents you from getting leg fatigue, keeps you from unwittingly speeding and is great on long trips, but driving with it on in winter conditions can be unsafe. Thus, if cruise control has become a staple of your driving habits, make a conscious effort to ensure that you are not using it in winter weather.

Using cruise control in the snow, ice or even rain is dangerous because if your car hydroplanes or skids, it will accelerate and rapidly spin the wheels since it will be trying to maintain a constant speed. If this happens, it will be more likely that you lose control of your vehicle.

5. Pull over or stay home.

If at any point during your trip -- or before you even leave -- you feel that the weather is too bad to continue driving, simply stay put. If you're out on the road, find a safe spot to pull over and wait until the weather passes or calms to the point where you feel comfortable driving again. If you haven't left yet, stay home and off the roads.

Remember, there is no shame in making the logical decision to stay in when the conditions are bad. You may be late arriving to your destination, but arriving late in one piece is much better than the alternative. Your boss or significant other will understand.

Top Gear magazine has officially named the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque its Car Of The Year for 2011 after snagging top honors in the SUV category. Perhaps even more impressively, Jeremy Clarkson also named the Evoque his favorite vehicle of 2011. The compact luxury SUV faced off against the likes of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, McLaren MP4-12C and Ferrari FF among more common offerings. Top Gear celebrated in classic style by taking the Evoque on an African adventure through the deserts and mountains of Morocco. Sure beats handing an anonymous executive some cheesy trophy on stage.

Feds Want To Standardize Keyless Ignition Systems To Address Safety Concerns

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is proposing a rule that would standardize keyless ignition systems, citing a NASA study following consumer complaints about runaway Toyotas, among other safety-related concerns.
The proposal says it will "reduce the risk that drivers will misuse these new systems" and "reduce crashes, injuries and deaths resulting from a driver's inability to shut down a moving vehicle."
The feds say there will be "little incremental cost" to a vehicle's bottom line beyond "additional software coding."

WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is proposing a rule that would standardize keyless ignition systems, citing a NASA study following consumer complaints about runaway Toyotas, among other safety-related concerns.

The proposal says it will "reduce the risk that drivers will misuse these new systems" and "reduce crashes, injuries and deaths resulting from a driver's inability to shut down a moving vehicle." The proposed rule was published Monday in the Federal Register.

"At issue are drivers' inability to stop a moving vehicle in a panic situation, and drivers who unintentionally leave the vehicle without the vehicle transmission's being 'locked in park,' or with the engine still running, increasing the chances of vehicle rollaway or carbon monoxide poisoning in an enclosed area," the proposal said.

NHTSA said the proposal was prompted in part by consumer complaints, as well as a NASA recommendation that the federal safety agency "consider regulation of controls for managing safety critical functions."

After NASA's February 2011 technical assessment of Toyota's electronic throttle control systems, NHTSA noted that "keyless ignition systems can exacerbate UA (unintended acceleration) incidents, particularly prolonged incidents involving a stuck accelerator pedal if the driver cannot determine how to shut off the engine quickly."

The NASA study was prompted by the recall of millions of Toyota vehicles, a congressional investigation and a national debate about the nature of crashes of Lexus and Toyota vehicles.

Under the NHTSA proposal, holding the button for half a second would kill the engine.

"The propulsion system must shut down within 1 second of the initial push of the stop control," the proposed rule says.

The rule also proposes that the driver gets an audible warning if he or she tries to shut off the car without first placing the gear selection control in "park." The standardized systems would also get an external alert that the driver and bystanders can hear when the vehicle is not in "park" and the driver exists the vehicle.

NHTSA says it is "addressing an emerging safety issue with non-standardized new technology." It says systems that don't require a physical key to start a car have grown from about 5,000 vehicles in model year 2002 to over 1.2 million in model year 2008.

The feds say there will be "little incremental cost" to a vehicle's bottom line beyond "additional software coding."

Lincoln pads MKS sedan, MKT crossover with more technology

LOS ANGELES -- Lincoln has loaded its flagship MKS sedan and MKT full-sized crossover with lots of new technology in a freshening for 2013. But the first thing customers will notice is the latest versions of the vehicles don't have the waterfall grille anymore.

Though the new grille retains the same vertical bars, it has lost the in-your-face look that turned off some customers.

"The effort behind the new look was to change the proportion of the MKT from the front view. We helped make it feel wider and a bit less tall, less vertical," Max Wolff, Lincoln design director, said in a press release.

"The execution of the new MKT's grille and the grille bars is a lot more refined and elegant. The new front graphic displays a lot of three dimensionality, but it's accomplished in a calmer, more restrained way."

Wolff used similar words to describe the look of the 2013 MKS. The refreshed versions of both vehicles make their debut here at the Los Angeles Auto Show today.

Prices edge up

The base-level MKT will sell for $46,160, including an $875 destination charge, Lincoln said, up 2 percent from $45,175 on the 2012 model.

The sticker on the entry-level MKS will be $43,685, including $875 destination, up 3 percent from $42,385 on the 2012 model. The two vehicles are just going into production and will go on sale at the beginning of the second quarter of next year.

Lincoln executives hope the new look will help persuade customers to give Lincoln's two standard bearers serious consideration. Lincoln believes customers will find a lot of technology inside the vehicles that's competitive with that of import luxury brands.

At the top of the list of new features is Continuously Controlled Damping, which monitors and adjusts suspension settings up to 500 times a second for improved ride and handling. The feature comes standard on the MKS and is offered with the top-of-the-line 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine on the MKT.

'More relevant' to more consumers

Both vehicles also get a system called Lincoln Drive Control, which allows drivers to change the car's on-road personality by switching the gear lever to Drive or Sport modes.

The new systems will bring a "significant lift in overall vehicle dynamics," said C.J. O'Donnell, Lincoln group marketing manager, in an interview here. "We're out to make the Lincoln brand more relevant to more customers."

The MKS and MKT also will come with the newly upgraded version of the MyLincoln Touch console control system. Many customers found the first generation of MyLincoln Touch to be balky, confusing and needlessly complex. Lincoln responded with an upgraded version of the system it says is simpler and more responsive.

The new MyLincoln Touch will appear in a redesigned center console that will make a "big move away from very horizontal themes" that dominate in the current vehicles, Wolff said.

With the departure of the Lincoln Town Car, which went out of production in August, Lincoln is introducing stretched versions of the MKT to cater to the limousine and livery market.

7 New Lincolns Coming Out Over the Next 3 Years

The repositioning of Ford's luxury brand, Lincoln, will succeed or fail based on seven new models over the next three years, including the smallest vehicle ever sold under the Lincoln brand.

Lincoln will introduce a new car or crossover within the next 18 months off the C-segment platform underpinning the Focus, executives said.

Lincoln dealers have sold 57,823 vehicles in the U.S. this year through August, up 3.7% from a year earlier. But leading luxury brands BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus each sold more than twice that number in the same period.

Beginning late this year, Lincoln will unveil the first of seven all-new or refreshed models. Led by global product development chief Derrick Kuzak and new design director Max Wolff, Lincoln's product revival is ambitious.

Styling will try to lure young, affluent buyers not wedded to German or Japanese brands. New Lincolns will share no sheet metal with Fords. The brand also will target early adapters of new technology and more women than it reached traditionally.

"Reinvigorating any brand doesn't happen in one product cycle," Kuzak said. "We made a step with the MK nameplates. Now we need to take the next step."

Lincoln began switching from traditional model names to three letters beginning with MK in 2007. The MKZ hybrid has done well in California, but other models have not been compelling enough to gain market share.

Now Lincoln is shrinking the number of dealers in the country's 130 largest markets from 500 to 350 by the end of this year.

Change became essential after Ford phased out its Mercury brand in 2010. Lincoln and Mercury dealers were paired and Lincoln volume alone was not enough for many dealers to be profitable.

Kuzak, Wolff and their product development team are anxious to get the new sheet metal to market.

"As you continue to improve the products and strengthen the brand, the real measure is delivering better revenue," Kuzak said.

Lincoln shines again as Ford continues to grow in August 2011

Ford Motor Company had another strong month in August 2011, lead in part by the increase in year over year sales by their Lincoln brand which continues to push ahead without new models.

When Ford Motor Company opted to kill off the Mercury brand, Lincoln-Mercury dealerships around the country were left to struggle with just a single, expensive brand but after the initial drop felt by losing Mercury, the Lincoln dealerships saw their second strong month in a row. Also, with 167,214 units sold in August, Ford was the single largest brand in the American auto industry.

The Lincoln brand was the top performer in terms of growth in August 2011 for Ford Motor Company with an increase of 25% compared to August 2010. The Lincoln MKZ (cousin of the Ford Fusion) led the luxury brand in growth with an increase of 50% over last year while also leading the brand in sales with 2,337 units sold. The Lincoln Town Car was the next best in terms of growth with a 45% improvement and the Lincoln MKS was third in growth with a jump of 35%. The Lincoln MKX was 4th in growth with a 15% increase while the MKT and Navigator were the only two models in the lineup to show a decline in sales.

The Ford brand was next in line in growth among the two brands of the Motor Company with an improvement of 16% over last August. The top model from Ford in terms of growth was the new Ford Explorer with a gain of 300% over last year – although last year’s sales were based on the old Explorer. The Crown Victoria was second in growth with a gain of 141% with the new Ford Fiesta continuing to grow with a jump of 76% over August 2010. As always, the Ford F Series lineup was the bestselling model from Ford with 48,795 (also making the F Series the bestselling model in America) with the Ford Escape ranking second in sales with 20,607 units sold and the Ford Fusion was third with 17,925 sedans sold.

Ford is expected to bring out more new or redesigned models as well as a vast refresh of the Lincoln lineup over the next year and as we head into auto show season, there could be more good things to come for the folks behind the blue oval.

(Posted 8/22, 2:00 p.m.) Detroit. America’s two luxury contenders are at different places in their corporate lives at the moment. The short story is that Cadillac is in the mature growth stage of a decade-plus push to reinvent itself. And Lincoln, while not exactly starting over entirely, has pressed the reset button to such an extent that it might as well be.

Notice I didn’t say Lincoln vs. Cadillac. Any hoary notion that these two luxury contenders will battle each other in the market is long gone. With Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus being the premier players in the U.S. luxury segment, and Hyundai getting closer to becoming a player in it by the day, any thought that Lincoln and Cadillac will end up in a quaint battle of some kind is silly and an exercise in irrelevant nostalgia.

Of the two domestic luxury players, Cadillac certainly has the upper hand at the moment. Embarking on a long journey to gain back credibility and respect, Cadillac abandoned its “Vogue tires and vinyl top” persona for good with the commitment to its contemporary “art and science” design language that surfaced more than a decade ago. And with this new “face” of Cadillac that emerged on cars, crossovers and SUVs, Cadillac’s presence on the streets and byways of America changed with it.

Not content to stop there, however, the True Believers at GM wanted more, and thus Cadillac’s foray into world-class luxury-performance respectability with its growing array of “V-series” cars, a move that was fraught with peril but has turned out to be a pleasant surprise, with each “V-series” model being more impressive than the one that came before.

But the honchos at GM charged with nourishing the Cadillac brand image are growing restless. They know that the V-series cars are impressive and they can continue to do them in their sleep, but they’re aching to become a complete luxury-performance player like their chief rivals, especially their German counterparts.

That’s why you’ll be seeing the new “ATS” lineup of more compact luxury cars making its debut and a slightly larger CTS, so Cadillac’s market entries better match-up against the 3 and 5 Series models from BMW. And that’s why the Cadillac XTS, the long-overdue larger sedan from Cadillac, is on its way too.
But Cadillac isn’t stopping there.

The True Believers in product development and design at GM (as well as the marketing players who intermittently get it) are focusing on what’s next. And what’s next for Cadillac was teased last week at Pebble Beach during the annual week-long car orgy that just keeps getting better and more over-the-top with each passing year.

The Cadillac Ciel concept (below) foreshadows the design direction for the “uber” Cadillac that has long been rumored and is now slated for production reality in 2014 or thereabouts. Most likely powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.6L V-6 with a hybrid system using lithium-ion battery technology like this concept, the new Cadillac will first make its debut as a sedan in the $100,000+ range, but don’t be surprised if a luxury-performance roadster similar to the Ciel concept follows 12 to 18 months later.

Is Cadillac ready for this? That’s the billion dollar question. Careers are made or vanquished with such pivotal decisions in this business every year and no one knows for sure. Is it possible? Certainly. GM’s True Believers have demonstrated convincingly with cars like the CTS-V Coupe and the Corvette Z06 and ZR1 that they are more than capable of excellence when they put their collective minds to it.

But with a full plate of small, medium and full-size luxury cars on the docket, I would be content to see Cadillac refine, hone and polish the aggressive new lineup they have first – which is The Plan, I’m assuming – before they attack the super-premium segment.

But then again this business has become a swirling maelstrom of “what have you done lately” and these manufacturers are only as good as their last bit of product news, so the pressure on Cadillac will be intense. And the reveal of the Ciel at Pebble Beach takes on a greater significance because it is consistent with GM Design’s strategy of late as far as “telegraphing” what’s on the horizon.

It’s also very much a stake in the ground for the True Believers in product development, because they now know that the design troops are up to the challenge, and that they must deliver a technical package that meets or exceeds the expectations established by the gorgeous sheet metal rendered in the Ciel, as well as being up to the task of competing with the more established players who have been churning out excellence for years.

So Cadillac is very much a work in progress. An established player reenergized of late in the luxury-performance segment, but one that is at a pivotal juncture in its renaissance. Will Cadillac get better and solidify its place in the segment, or will they lose focus and implode while trying to bite off more than it can chew? We shall see.

And what about Lincoln?

The other historic American luxury brand has been languishing for too long in a limbo of Town Cars for the livery trade combined with minimal re-skins of existing Ford products, as well as being lost in a corporate fog – at least at the dealer level – when it came to being saddled with the Dearborn-based automaker’s indecision on Mercury. And after years of meandering in the wilderness of largely self-induced mistakes that tarnished its legacy, Lincoln has finally hit rock bottom.

But after jettisoning Mercury, Ford operatives have finally finished the house cleaning necessary to focus on Lincoln. Sometimes it takes having nothing to lose in order to make something special happen, and Lincoln has arrived at that point right now. By that I mean the brand has only one way to go and now that Ford has committed to Lincoln’s revival there is a new energy and buzz surrounding the brand that hasn’t been seen since, well, it’s too long to even contemplate.

Are they starting over completely in terms of product technology? Absolutely not. Far from it, in fact. The current MKX points to where Lincoln is at the moment, but it also hints at where it’s going too, with an array of driving and communications technology that’s impressive, and even more so when you get behind the wheel.

But Ford executives are also painfully aware that the current MKX, MKS and MKZ are mere placeholders in the overall scheme of things. And while committing to resurrect Lincoln, Ford executives knew that if they half-assed it Lincoln would never get off of the mat, which is why they’re creating basically an all-new, self-contained organization that’s completely focused on all aspects of the brand, including design, engineering, marketing, public relations and the ever-crucial dealer experience.

This is not just the reinvention and resurrection of Lincoln - it’s an entirely new car company coming together almost completely under the radar. Well, almost anyway. Ford operatives have quietly been taking various media representatives “under the tent” of late so that they may understand just how complete the transformation of Lincoln really is. And of course in the midst of this, media-types have been given more than a glimpse of the first shot in Lincoln’s product transformation, the all-new MKZ, which is a sensational-looking car that very much establishes the new look of Lincoln.

But is it enough? I do know that the question of what Lincoln wants to be when it grows up is still very much in flux down in Dearborn. Some insiders think that Lincoln should be content to go after Lexus, and some think that the brand should be an American-ized version of Audi. Fortunately no one down there appears to be clamoring to go after the “out-German the Germans” space that Cadillac is all about of late, as I think that would be a huge mistake.

No, I sense that the executives charged with the rejuvenation of Lincoln understand that they need to go their own way and that any sort of “me-too” thinking in this segment could prove to be mediocre for them, if not fatal. Which means if Lincoln operatives in all of the disciplines can brew up a cocktail of just the right ingredients, I believe Lincoln not only has a legitimate shot at respectability, it has all the potential to become a solid player in the luxury segment again.

This tale of two American luxury brands is a complex and fluid one. Cadillac understands who it is, but wants to be better and wants more. Much more. Lincoln on the other hand understands the worthy parts of its heritage but wants to re-imagine itself with a mixture of avant-garde design and forward-thinking technology for the brave new automotive world that exists today

Ultimately its about credibility, respectability and prestige.
And the proof, as always, will be in the product.
As well it should be.
And that’s the High-Octane Truth for this week.

Jaguar-Land Rover Opens Assembly Plant in India, Rolls Out its First Model

Gone are the times when you knew where cars were made just by looking at the brand, and when luxury carmakers made the manufacturing of their vehicles in their home country one of their top selling points. Nowadays, you have BMWs built in China, India, South Africa and the USA, Mercedes-Benz cars made in Russia, Thailand and Egypt and so on.

The latest premium automaker to go global is the Jaguar-Land Rover group, which inaugurated its first Indian factory on Friday. A Land Rover Freelander 2 SUV was the first vehicle to roll out of the assembly plant, which is located just outside Pune in the Maharashtra region of India. We’ll remind you that Ford Motor Co. sold Jaguar and Land Rover to India’s Tata Motors in 2008 after losing some US$15 billion in two years.

Tata Motors believes that the assembly of Land Rover models in India will help the company better compete against rivals such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, all of which already build vehicles in the booming South Asian country.

“We are excited about the prospect of assembling cars in Pune for the Indian market where we have achieved significant growth since we opened our first showroom in 2009,” said Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover. “It is a great time to be expanding our operation in India due to the increasing demand for luxury products and the strength of the Indian economy."

The Pune facility will assemble Land Rover Freelander 2 vehicles supplied in Complete Knock Down (CKD) form sourced from the British firm’s Halewood manufacturing plant in Liverpool, UK. The SUV will be available in India in two variants, the TD4 SE Automatic and the SD4 HSE Automatic, with local prices starting from INR 3.39 million, or around 15 percent lower than the current imported models.

Recent media reports have suggested that Jaguar Land Rover is also looking into building a new engine plant in India, but the company has not yet confirmed the news.

Roadside assistance workers are true highway heroes. Day and night, in all kinds of weather, theseÂ roadside problem solvers are the face of AAA to millions of grateful members. Sadly, their job also is one of the most dangerous. Some are injured in the line of duty. Others never make it home
But many states have laws that help ensure the safety of roadside assistance personnel and other emergency responders. "Move Over" laws, as they have come to be known, require motorists to change lanes or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles such as police cars, fire trucks and ambulances, or roadside assistance vehicles such as tow trucks, stopped on the side of the road with their lights flashing. Move over laws have been adopted in 43 states, but only 29 states provide protection for drivers of tow trucks and recovery vehicles.
Although "Move Over" laws exist in most states, there is still little knowledge of them. In a national poll, 71 percent of Americans said they have not heard of them. Law wording varies from state to state, but here are some general answers to key questions to help keep you and roadside workers safe.
What should I do if I see an emergency vehicle stopped on the side of the road with lights flashing?

First, slow down so that you can assess the situation. If you're on a multi-lane highway and it's safe to do so, move over by changing lanes away from the emergency vehicle. Leave at least one vacant lane between you and the emergency vehicle to provide a safe zone for emergency vehicles or workers performing their jobs in the area.

What should I do if I'm not able to safely change lanes away from the emergency vehicle or I'm on a two-lane road?

If you are unable to safely move over by changing lanes, you should slow down to at least 20 mph below the posted speed limit and approach with caution.
If I cannot change lanes safely, should I stop my vehicle in the roadway?

No, you should slow down while maintaining a safe speed. Do not stop in the roadway or block the flow of traffic unless directed to do so by emergency personnel.
How can I avoid becoming involved in a crash when traffic slows?

Stay alert. The single most important thing you can do to protect yourself and others is to pay attention behind the wheel. By scanning the roadway for incidents that lie ahead of you and being aware of activities of vehicles around you, you will be able to anticipate problems and react safely.
Moving over or slowing down for emergency vehicles on the roadside is the safe thing to do in any state you drive, because it provides a needed safety cushion for those who help motorists and keeps them safe on the roadways. Doing so is not just the right thing to do—it's the law in most states.

Routine Cleaning
Dirt, road salt, tar and various other forms of gunk, goo and residue are your car's worst enemies. Keeping them off your vehicle's bodywork, year-round, is the basic challenge. Hand-washing a car remains the best and most effective way to do this, but it must be done the right way, and even then it is not the most environmentally friendly way to go.

These days the "greenest" way to wash your car is to run it through an automatic car wash. Studies show that a session in the car wash uses roughly half the water the average owner would use while washing it at home with the traditional bucket and hose. Commercial car-wash systems are also required, by law, to contain and collect the water used during the wash. So are professional detailers. The waste water is then cleaned and, in most cases, used again.

Automatic car-wash systems even get the nod from car-care professionals, especially when it comes to routine cleanings. David Lee, owner and operator of L.A. Detail, based in Toronto, offers thorough detailing services, but he freely admits to using commercial car-wash systems for his personal vehicle and says he finds them both useful and practical.

However, Lee is also quick to point out that not all systems are equally safe and effective. He favors the high-pressure, no-contact systems and warns against using systems with rotating brushes or moplike, moving felt mats. It's hard to assess how well-maintained these systems are, and your car's paint finish might be at the mercy of the grit that was scrubbed off the crusty old jalopy that passed through the wash just before your car. And paint could be at risk even in the best-maintained systems because of the friction generated by the brushes and mats.

High-pressure systems also are useful in performing the most difficult of tasks: cleaning off as much dirt and salt as possible from your vehicle's undercarriage, fender liners and rocker panels. The operation is entirely worth the extra couple of dollars, Lee says. "The best approach is to run your vehicle through a car wash regularly to keep the dirt from building up and digging into the surface," he says.

Lee adds that brush-free systems are at their best when only a light wash is needed. Frequency then becomes the key. Their weak point is glass, "so I always use the squeegee on glass surfaces before running my vehicle through," he says.

The golden rule for hand-washing is to be gentle to avoid scratching or etching the car's finish.

The Dirty Job
For really dirty jobs, the best and most effective way to wash a vehicle still involves elbow grease. That's how pro detailers do it to this day. It's the only way some dirt and residue can be removed. Clay, for instance, can leave a hazy, brownish film that will resist a high-pressure brushless car wash.

While hand-washing might get your vehicle the cleanest, it can be far from environmentally friendly. The main culprits are the excessive use of water and the release of harmful substances such as soap residue, oil, acid and metal particles into the sewer system while washing and rinsing. Some cities and states have banned home car washing for these reasons. Others do so indirectly by forbidding all use of tap water outdoors to preserve dwindling supplies during hot spells.

If you plan to wash at home, your first move is to get automotive soap and cleaners that are biodegradable and nontoxic. Even then, you should avoid washing over pavement, which would let the wash water drain into a sewer, storm drain or ditch that would then let it seep into the water system. Make sure to wash over grass or gravel that will absorb the water into the ground to reduce or eliminate the environmental impact.

Hand-Wash the Right Way
The golden rule for hand-washing, Lee says, is to be "as gentle as possible" to avoid scratching or etching the finish. Make sure your car is cool and parked in the shade. You should also wash in the shade to keep the surface from drying out instantly and leaving soap streaks and scratches.

Fill two buckets with tap water. The first gets the soap, with the right dilution ratio, and the second is for rinsing dirt and particles off thoroughly as you go over the car, section by section, moving from top to bottom. Leave the rocker panels and wheels, always the dirtiest bits, for last. Otherwise, the grit from these areas will get stuck in the cleaning rags and scratch the finish off your car as you rub it clean.

Your first step it to give your car the best possible rinse to remove as much of the dirt, dust and grime as possible. Pressure washers do a good job. Lee's team uses and recommends them. "They get dirt out of the nooks and crannies and save a lot of water, too, since pressure does most of the job," he says.

You should use two soft mittens or natural sponges for washing. The first only touches the painted surfaces and the second only the wheels, tires and other dirtiest bits. Rinse them in the second bucket as much as needed to get rid of the slightest grain of sand or dirt. Work in sections that you rinse with the hose as you go. Turn the water off between rinses to avoid waste.

Lee gives the nod to the traditional chamois, be it natural or synthetic, to dry the car afterward. Let the chamois soak thoroughly before use and rinse it frequently. Another pro tip is to use the moist chamois to wipe hazy deposits from the instrument panel and the inside of the windshield once the exterior is done.

A good spring cleaning should also include the floors, where a lot of grit, grime, salt and water has accumulated, often leaving a nasty crust where it dries. An excellent tool for this operation is a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. First, vacuum up as much of the dry stuff as you can. If deposits remain, scrub them with a brush, hot water and some vinegar, but do so sparingly. Then vacuum again quickly. Do not use too much water; it will dissolve the salt, and the resulting mixture will seep under the carpet and never dry. The result might be a rusted floor pan. The door jambs and sills should also be cleaned, this time with lukewarm water and soap.

Additional Steps
Once your car shines after that spring cleaning, you will want to wax it for protection against the elements, including the scorching summer sun. Lee says that the two-stage approach of applying a pre-cleaner compound first and then a protective wax is worth the extra effort.

You can also use "dressing" products on your tires. "Use the clear, petroleum-based type that seems to 'nourish' the rubber," Lee says. It is best to apply it with a cloth instead of spraying it on to avoid getting the stuff on your alloy wheels, where it becomes "a dust magnet." And you should wipe off the excess after a few minutes. Indeed, if the oily liquid mixes with brake dust and spins off onto rocker panels and fenders, it can permanently damage the paint.

These additional steps will help preserve the long-term appearance and value of your prized possession. And a clean car always runs nicer, doesn't it?

Goss, 53, will have overall responsibility for the National Sales Company operations of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands in the United States and Canada.

Gary Temple, President of Jaguar Land Rover North America since 2007 has announced his intention to retire later this year following a hand-over period with Andy Goss.

Formerly Chief Executive Officer of Porsche Cars GB, Andy Goss will take up his new position on May 1. He will report to Phil Popham, Director, Group Sales Operations for Jaguar Land Rover.

2011 LINCOLN MKZ Hybrid Makes Up One-Fifth of Total MKZ Sales

Lincoln has revealed 394 of the 1774 Lincoln MKZs sold in February were hybrid models, meaning the Lincoln MKZ hybrid accounted for more than 22 percent of all Lincoln MKZ sales. Lincoln expected the hybrid to make up about 15 percent of Lincoln MKZ sales, but sales of the car have taken off in recent weeks, occasionally peaking as high as 23 percent of Lincoln MKZ sales, according to Lincoln Public Relations Manager Christian Bokich.

The Lincoln MKZ hybrid, which returns 41 mpg in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway, is unique among hybrids because it is the same price as its non-hybrid version at $35,180, including destination charges. Bokich thinks that the price parity is helping make the Lincoln MKZ hybrid more attractive to buyer, but he also noted some buyers will continue to gravitate toward the gasoline version, because it’s the only Lincoln MKZ available with all-wheel drive.

Even so, the Lincoln MKZ hybrid manages to outpace its closest competition: the $35,975 Lexus HS250h. Lexus managed to sell only 286 examples of the hybrid sedan in January 2011, and 183 in February.

Meanwhile the Ford Fusion hybrid, which is mechanically similar to the Lincoln MKZ, sells in higher volumes overall but makes up a smaller portion of total Fusion sales. In February, Ford sold 1379 Fusion hybrids, just six percent of the 23,111 total Fusions sales in that month. That’s not an apples-to-apples comparison with the Lincoln, however, as the Fusion hybrid is more expensive than many trim levels of non-hybrid Fusion.

Jaguar 4-Cyl. Diesel to Debut in NY

Jaguar unveils its most efficient engine yet: a 2.2L diesel 4-cyl. unit, as well as an advanced 8-speed automatic gearbox from German supplier ZF. The new powertrain will feature in a future XF production car with specifications and an estimated on-sale date to be announced at the New York auto show opening April 22. Jaguar says the new engine develops 187 hp and 332 lb.-ft. (450 Nm) of torque and is capable of returning 52.3 mpg (4.5 L/100 km) on the combined cycle while emitting 149 g/km of carbon dioxide. Debuting in the U.K. in a prototype development vehicle, the new 16-valve common-rail diesel is installed in a longitudinal configuration, a first for Jag. It features a water-cooled turbocharger with low-friction pistons, new injectors and a new crankshaft. Jaguar says the changed configuration allowed Jaguar engineers to add a new oil pan and electronic systems affecting the crankshaft to enable the new Intelligent Stop/Start system to operate more efficiently. Intelligent Stop/Start aims to reduce the prolonged time spent in the shutdown and start-up phase occasionally experienced in these systems. Jaguar says the new crankshaft sensor and fuel-rail pressure-holding system allow the engine to restore power more quickly through an innovative engine restart capability. Future Jaguar XF to feature 2.2L diesel engine. “This is best demonstrated when approaching a busy roundabout – in situations where the driver briefly brings the vehicle to a stop only to move off again quickly,” Jaguar says. “In conventional systems, the engine needs to shut down completely before restarting again, leading to often frustrating delays.” The Jaguar system is able to restart the engine while it's shifting down from as little as 400 rpm, meaning it does not need to come to a stop and drive is restored more efficiently. The inclusion of the stop/start function is estimated to increase overall fuel efficiency between 5% and 7%. The development vehicle also debuts an advanced 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. With the seventh and eighth ratios effectively acting as overdrive gears, the new gearbox allows the 2.2L engine to be optimized to deliver swift response when required and effortless highway cruising to ensure the ideal balance between efficiency and performance, Jaguar says. The sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 8.5 seconds before achieving a maximum speed of 140 mph (225 km/h). Jaguar says its engineers emphasized sound deadening around the engine and bulkhead and employed active engine mounts to reduce vibration. The result is a decibel reduction in cabin noise.

DETROIT -- Lincoln led all brands in reliability after three years, market research firm J.D. Power and Associates said Thursday, in a boost to the Ford luxury brand's attempt at a sales revival.

Lincoln took the No. 1 position for the first time in the two-decade history of the J.D. Power and Associate's Vehicle Dependability Study, which measures the reliability of 3-year-old vehicles by compiling the number of problems per 100 vehicles. The luxury brand averaged 101 problems, compared with the industry average of 151. That translates into about 1 problem per Lincoln vehicle, whereas the industry averaged 1.5 problems per vehicle.

Lexus finished second with 109 problems per 100 vehicles, and Jaguar placed third with 112.

Overall, foreign brands' 3-year-old models averaged 18 fewer problems per 100 vehicles than domestic brands. But in another J.D. Power study that focuses on new vehicles, Detroit automakers' quality last year outperformed that of foreign automakers for the first time in the study's 24-year history. That should translate to an improved three-year reliability score for domestics by 2013.

J.D. Power based the three-year reliability study on responses this fall from 43,700 original owners of 2008 model-year cars.

Since announcing the death of Mercury in June, Ford has promised to revive Lincoln with seven new or redesigned vehicles in the next four years, including its first compact car.

From 2005 to 2009, Ford worked hard to recast Lincoln's styling and design. Since 2005, Lincoln has introduced four new models, each with a distinctive bow wave grille.

Still, Lincoln's sales performance continues to lag. Lincoln's sales increased 3.6 percent last year, but that was the slimmest gain among major luxury brands and it was smaller than the industry's gain of 11 percent. Through February of this year, Lincoln's 16.1 percent sales decline also trails all luxury brands.

The J.D. Power recognition "really is some confirmation for us that the processes that we put into place three or four years ago, the product-development processes that we undertook, are starting to show," said Scott Tobin, director of Lincoln product development.

Now Lincoln needs validation in the overall marketplace. Tobin said durability, which links closely with longer-term reliability, is the No. 1 purchase influencer for consumers.

Overall, Detroit automakers continued to trail their overseas counterparts, with only Buick, Cadillac and Ford joining Lincoln above the industry average. Still, the industry as a whole reached its most reliable level in the study's two-decade history.

But industry improvements are slowing due to an increase in problems with new electronic features, J.D. Power said. The industry has improved an average of 6% annually since 2009, compared with an annual 8 percent improvement over the past decade.

"Automakers, as a whole, have made significant improvements in reducing traditional problems, particularly with vehicle interiors; engines and transmissions; and steering and braking," said David Sargent, J.D. Power's vice president of global vehicle research, in a statement. "However, as manufacturers add new features and technologies to satisfy customer demand and new legislation, they face the potential for introducing new problems."

Automakers can stand out in a market filled with new electronics by making their systems reliable, Sargent said.

Geneva Motor Show 2011, the XKR-S is the most extreme expression
yet of Jaguar’s passion for building beautiful, fast cars. For the first
time with a series production car, Jaguar gains entry to the exclusive
‘300kph club’ (186mph) thanks to the effortless performance of the
supercharged 5.0-litre AJ-V8 engine. A revised fueling map means the
direct-injection powerplant now produces 550hp* and 502 lb/ft of
torque. Extensive tuning has ensured that power delivery and
performance are seamless, contributing to a 0-60mph time of 4.2
seconds. The active exhaust encourages and rewards the
enthusiastic driver with dramatic, motorsport-inspired aural feedback.

The pinnacle of the XK range builds on experience gathered from the
supercharged XKR and has been developed to extend the
performance parameters of the car. This new sharper-edged
character allows the enthusiastic driver to explore the limits of the
car’s dynamics without losing the refinement for which Jaguar is
famous. The structural rigidity of the lightweight aluminum platform
allowed the suspension to be reworked with bespoke components for
increased stiffness without a commensurate loss of refinement. A
reworked aluminum front suspension knuckle and revised rear
geometry are allied to stiffer springs and dampers, lightweight forged
alloy wheels and recalibrated steering effort provide immediate
response and produce a more connected and agile driving experience.

The performance of the XKR-S is reflected in both its interior and exterior styling, which
feature exclusive new paint colors that reflect Jaguar’s racing heritage. As with competition
Jaguar cars of the past, the exterior of the XKR-S adheres to the principle of form following
function. In addition to the styling changes, the XKR-S was the subject of extensive
Computational Fluid Dynamics development work in order for it to achieve 186mph. The
resultant changes reduce front and rear lift and optimizes lateral aerodynamic stability.
The performance intent of the XKR-S is clear from the moment the driver enters the cabin
thanks to new cosseting Performance seats with prominent shoulder bolsters for close
support during hard cornering. The seats feature 16-way adjustment, with memory and
heating functions. A new three-spoke steering wheel provides the perfect interface between
car and driver.

Styling

The first Jaguar designed entirely under the guidance of Design Director Ian Callum, the XK
has received accolades worldwide for its arresting appearance. Now further styling changes
keep the XKR-S at the forefront of modern sports car design. Slimmer LED headlights, more
compact main air intake and vertical side power vent all contribute to a more purposeful frontend appearance. At the rear of the car, the famous Jaguar ‘Leaper’ now proudly takes its'
place in the center of the decklid.

The XKR-S also required aerodynamic modifications to achieve its 186mph top speed in the
unruffled manner expected of a Jaguar. It has been designed solely with an eye for purity of
line and singularity of purpose. As the XKR-S approaches its top speed, there is a
requirement to channel air cleanly over, around and under the car in order to maintain stability
and ensure balanced downforce front and rear. An overall reduction in lift of 26 percent has
been achieved.

The necessary revisions were made after extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics work,
proven through wind tunnel testing and are unique to this flagship of the XK range. The most
dramatic changes have been applied to the front of the car, radically altering its appearance
and lending it a more assertive look. A new bumper design features near vertical feature lines
running down from the edges of the oval air intake and supporting the new carbon-fiber
splitter and lower spoiler. At the extreme edges of the front fenders, vertical slots channel air
down the sides of the car and along the wider sills for increased high-speed directional
stability.

In order to balance front and rear lift, the XKR-S features a separate rear wing, a first for the
XK range. This addition, with its carbon-fiber center section, works in concert with the
similarly constructed venturi effect structure underneath the rear bumper.

The assertive new appearance of the XKR-S is subtly highlighted by some carefully chosen
details exclusive to this model. Exterior trim is finished in gloss black, complemented by 20-
inch Vulcan lightweight forged alloys in a dark finish.

The XKR-S is available in five paint colors, two of which evoke Jaguar’s competition heritage:
Italian Racing Red and French Racing Blue.

Like the lining of a bespoke suit, the finishing touch is provided by the brake calipers,
available in either red or gunmetal and emblazoned with the ‘Jaguar’ name.

Astonishing engines have always formed the strongly beating heart of Jaguar’s road and race
cars from the record-setting straight-six in the XK120 to the smooth V12 that made the XJ12
the fastest four-door in the world when it was launched.

The AJ-V8 joined this illustrious list from the moment the first one was fired into life but in the
XKR-S it is presented in its most potent form to date. Now in its third iteration and with the
addition of supercharging, the all-aluminum four-cam powerplant delivers not only extreme
performance but also improved efficiency thanks to the technologies incorporated into it,
including spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) and dual independent variable cam timing
(DIVCT).

Fuel is delivered directly to the center of the combustion chambers at over 2000 psi by the
centrally-mounted six-hole spray-guided injection system in order to maximize fuel-air mixing
and improve responsiveness, particularly at low speeds. It has also allowed an increase in
compression ratio from 9.1:1 to 9.5:1.

Each of the four camshafts features a variable timing system which is activated by the
positive and negative torques generated by the movement of the intake and exhaust valves
rather than being controlled by oil pressure. This design allows for a smaller, more efficient oil
pump to be fitted, reducing fuel consumption. The VCT units respond up to three times faster
than previously with actuation rates of more than 150 degrees per second at every point in
the RPM range,.

Like the car itself, the AJ-V8 features aluminum architecture with the high pressure die-cast
lightweight block with cast iron liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps. The four-valve
cylinder heads are now constructed using recycled aluminum to reduce the environmental
impact of engine manufacture.

Nestling in the ‘V’ of the cylinders is a Roots-type twin vortex supercharger and two
intercoolers that help provide the XKR-S with such urgent motive power. This sixth-generation
forced induction unit is 20 percent more thermodynamically efficient than its predecessor,
while the intercoolers feature their own water-cooling circuit to reduce the temperature of the
pressurized air to optimize power and efficiency.

Remapping the engine’s fueling characteristics and increasing exhaust gas flow through the
use of an active exhaust system has lifted total output of the 5.0-liter V8 to 550hp* and 502
lb/ft. making it the most powerful Jaguar road engine ever made. This powerplant allows the
XKR-S to hit 60mph in 4.2 seconds and touch the magical 300kph (186mph) barrier with
ease.

The Performance active exhaust system that helps provide such spirited performance also
produces a thrilling motorsport-inspired soundtrack to aurally reward the enthusiastic driver.

Jaguar pioneered the use of aluminum construction for production cars, exploiting the metal’s
low mass and high tensile strength to optimize benefits in terms of performance, agility, fuel
consumption, and emissions.

The aluminum platform underpinning the XK range makes the car light and rigid. This
fundamental strength allowed Jaguar’s Vehicle Integrity team, led by Mike Cross, to develop
the dynamic attributes of the XKR-S to the full, without affecting refinement. Every Jaguar
achieves an unrivalled mix of sporting appeal and luxurious comfort and the XKR-S is the
most driver focused Jaguar ever made.

Taking the solid foundation of the aluminum architecture as a starting point, both front and
rear suspensions have been upgraded. The double wishbone front suspension has been
comprehensively revised with a new aluminum steering knuckle that significantly increases
camber and castor stiffness; to transform the accuracy and weighting of the steering for
greater levels of connection, feedback and precision. The Active Differential Control has been
reprogrammed to reduce steering sensitivity at the very high speeds of which the car is
capable, increasing stability and driver control.

Rear suspension geometry has been revised with rear wheel steer while spring rates have
been increased at both ends of the car by 28 percent. Bespoke software for Jaguar’s
Adaptive Damping has been written for the XKR-S, ensuring both total body control and
maximum traction and grip.

Wheel sizes have been increased with lightweight forged "Vulcan" 20-inch alloys. The wheels
are now nine inches wide at the front and 10.5-inches at the rear for greater precision and
grip. The new wheels wear Pirelli® PZero® tires measuring 255/35 R20 at the front, 295/35
R20 at the rear. This combination has reduced overall unsprung mass by over 10 pounds,
with a commensurate improvement in handling and response.

The Dynamic Stability Control System has been reworked to optimize the benefit of these
wider tires. The "Trac DSC" mode utilizes specific traction, stability and eDiff settings to alter
slip thresholds, differential torque distribution, and intervention levels to allow the experienced
driver to explore the upper limits of the performance and handling envelope.

The end result is a car that captures the essential duality that is a characteristic of every great
Jaguar; capable of transporting the driver to the fabled Nürburgring in total comfort and
hushed silence, deliver a sub-eight minute lap time on the track, and return home with total
ease.

Interior
The cabin of any Jaguar is a special place to spend time. The driver is greeted by the red
Start button pulsing like a heartbeat. When pressed, the engine fires to life with a rich, deep
reverberation. The Jaguar Drive Selector rises from the center console as a point of first
contact, initiating the bond between driver and automobile.
The interior of the XKR-S has been subtly refreshed with a host of new trim materials
including ebony soft-feel paint for the switches and gloss black finish to the center console.
The model will also be exclusively available with a Dark Linear Aluminum finish as an option
to the wood veneers.

A new leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel has also been added along with
Jaguar-embossed stainless steel pedals to provide a beautiful, tactile interface between car
and driver.

Exclusive to the XKR-S are the new Performance front seats with integrated head restraints
and increased lateral support to hold driver and passenger securely and comfortably in place
during the high speed cornering. The 16-way adjustment of the seat is supplemented by
memory and heating functions.

The sense of occasion offered behind the wheel of the XKR-S will be heightened by the new
carbon leather accents covering the seats, featuring contrast micro-piping and stitching
combinations in Reims Blue, Red and Ivory. Duotone combinations of Charcoal with Tan and

Dealers scored a few wins when President Obama signed the new tax bill into law Friday. In addition to a lower estate tax and higher exemption to that tax than had once been expected, two other parts of the new law are expected to help the auto industry.

First, businesses will now be allowed to immediately depreciate 100 percent of new equipment purchased between Sept. 8, 2010, and the end of 2011. That covers company vehicles, subject to certain IRS rules pertaining to business use. It doubles a previous bonus depreciation provision of 50 percent and should encourage businesses to replace aging fleet units, says Bailey Wood of the National Automobile Dealers Association.

Businesses have been hanging on to their cash. Now expect many of them to be out shopping for new pickups for their work crews, Wood told me.

Wood also touted the extension of higher thresholds for investment deductions. For 2010 and 2011, companies can deduct up to $500,000 of capital investments, including machinery. For 2012, they can deduct up to $125,000. That not only bodes well for auto sales, he said, but it also will help dealerships make needed improvements to their own facilities.

Said Wood: "If you need to go out and buy a new car wash, this is the year to do it."

Since 1948 the men and women of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve have collected and distributed millions of toys each Holiday season through the Toys for Tots Program.

Here in Brevard County the Toys for Tots program Local Contributing Organization is administered by a very special group of volunteers- most all of them kids ranging in age from 9- 19. This dedicated group of boys and girls are members of the Florida Volunteer Search and Rescue Corps – SAR Corps for short.

Each weekend beginning in early November these dedicated young individuals will stand post collecting donations and new unwrapped toys from various Wal- Mart locations in Central Brevard. These young Cadets have been performing this invaluable humanitarian mission for the children and families of Brevard County since 1998. Some of these young adults give up their free time every Saturday and Sunday and most will put in a full day from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm. A noble task for anyone – especially some no more than 10 years old themselves.

In this 12th year, the children and families of Brevard need our help more than ever considering all of the financial hardships that so many have been faced with this year.

Island Lincoln mercury Jaguar Land rover is proud to be a supporter of such a dedicated and dilligent group of young people. We are an authorized Toys for Tots donation drop off/ collection location.

Jaguar Land Rover today announces four senior executive appointments into new board-level roles in a restructured and significantly enhanced global marketing and sales division.

The new organisational structure is being implemented to accelerate Jaguar Land Rover's continued progress towards developing a strong and consistently profitable global premium automotive business centred on the iconic Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

Phil Popham, currently Land Rover Managing Director, is appointed Director, Global Sales and Service Operations, Jaguar Land Rover. Popham, 45, who has more than 20 years' combined experience with the Land Rover and Jaguar brands, will have management responsibility for the global sales and after sales operations of both brands, overseeing the company's national and regional business units and the dealer network worldwide.

John Edwards, currently Managing Director, Land Rover UK and Central Europe, is appointed Global Brand Director, Land Rover. Edwards, 48, who has more than 10 years' experience with Land Rover, will assume global responsibility for the brand.

Ford Releases SDK to Next Set of App Developers; Shares Vision for Future In-Car App Creation

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ford is starting to release its Software Development Kit (SDK) to a new set of interested smartphone app developers so they can modify existing apps to work hands-free using voice recognition through Ford SYNC for safer command and control while driving.

The SDK release marks the latest move by Ford to forge a more open collaborative bond with the wireless, consumer electronics and app developer communities to create a safer and smarter in-car connectivity experience that leverages the mobile devices customers own and love.

â€œWe know we can do better things for our customers by allying with the companies that provide the devices and services they already use, trust and value,â€ said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president of Global Product Development, to the wireless telecommunications community at the annual CTIA Enterprise and Applications Conference. â€œWhat we see emerging as we explore new ways to safely enhance connectivity and reinvent the driving experience is a mutually beneficial â€˜collaborative communityâ€™ where our shared customer â€“ anyone who drives a car and owns a smartphone â€“ is the true beneficiary.â€

With drivers spending nearly three hours per day in their vehicle according to a 2009 Arbitron National In-Car Study, thereâ€™s no doubt customers will be tempted to use their mobile device in the car. In fact, recent studies already indicate 46 percent of adult smartphone users have apps on their phones and 36 percent of those admit to using those apps while commuting.

â€œMore and more drivers will find a way to use their devices and their apps while in the car,â€ said Kuzak. â€œThey can do it unsafely, or they can do it through safer voice-activated solutions such as Ford SYNC â€“ keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.â€

Understanding the potential of the SYNC application programming interface (API), app developers have been clamoring for the Ford SDK since the company announced the launch of the SYNC Developer website (www.syncmyride.com/developer). Since then, Ford has received and is reviewing more than 1,000 submissions from interested parties looking to modify existing apps or create all-new apps that can successfully interface with Ford SYNC through AppLink. As the software that leverages the SYNC API, AppLink can access mobile apps stored on a userâ€™s smartphone, and allows them to be controlled through the SYNC voice recognition system.

Pandora Internet radio, Stitcher smart radio and Orangatameâ€™s OpenBeak are the first apps to incorporate the SYNC API, with more on the way in coming months. To keep the user experience seamless, Ford will leverage existing app stores for distribution of updated SYNC-enabled versions of apps. Owners of SYNC AppLink-equipped cars simply download the enabled app through the appropriate app store for their smartphoneâ€™s operating system.

The driving environment
Being cautious with the SDK, Ford has developed stringent self-imposed guidelines for in-car app development, considering a whole set of parameters that make sense for the driving environment.

â€œOur goal is not to have thousands of apps available for the car,â€ said Kuzak at the CTIA conference, â€œbecause there are strict limitations on what should be allowed while driving.â€
Ford is in the process of evaluating the potential of existing apps that are appropriate for in-car use. Categories include:
Personalized entertainment such as Pandora Internet radio Personalized information and news such as Stitcher smart radio or Orangatameâ€™s OpenBeak Location-based services including navigation, traffic and business searches Notifications and alerts leveraging SYNCâ€™s ability to mash up vehicle information, GPS locations and more, all to provide the driver with customized information and guidance Financial apps that, for example, provide alerts such as stock price drops or overdrafts and, in the future, drive-by payments Scheduling and planning apps that could include notifications of flight status, for instance, in the event flights are delayed or rescheduled

Further down the road, Ford will also examine the potential of apps that can provide exciting new levels of safety knowledge as well as improvements in driver productivity and convenience.

â€œWe know our customers want connectivity from a convenience perspective and need it from a safety perspective,â€ said Kuzak. â€œWe want to leverage growing network speeds to create a world of apps on wheels that makes the vehicle experience simpler, safer, more productive and convenient.â€

Ford cruises to best July in 31 years

Ford Motor Co. was the top-selling automaker in Canada in July, recording its best performance in 31 years for the month, it said on Wednesday.

The company's Detroit-based rivals -- General Motors Co. and Chrysler -- made gains from a year earlier when they were deep into restructuring, while Toyota and Honda saw sales fall, industry figures showed.

Ford said on Wednesday that it sold 27,203 vehicles in July, up two per cent from 26,788 the previous July. Ford's car sales were up 45.6 per cent, while truck sales fell 8.9 per cent.

In July 2009, with GM and Chrysler nearly shut down, sales were tilted in Ford's favour, making last year's numbers tough for it to top this year, said David Mondragon, chief executive of Ford of Canada.

"Ford was the only major manufacturer to post a gain last July," he said in a release.

"Last year, Ford sales were up 47 per cent in July versus an industry decline of seven per cent. Posting a gain after last year's increase is good, but given the comparisons, a 31-year July sales record is impressive," Mondragon said.

Chrysler, which emerged from U.S. bankruptcy protection in June of last year under the control of Italy's Fiat SpA, said its Canadian sales jumped 39.9 per cent to 22,319 vehicles, making it the unit's strongest July since 1997.

"In June, our sales were up in excess of 100 per cent and now this is our best July in over a decade," Reid Bigland, chief executive of Chrysler Canada, said in a statement.

"When you couple these sales numbers with corporate operating profits in the first and second quarters of this year, I don't think there is any doubt that our restructuring efforts last year and alliance with Fiat are paying early dividends."

Chrysler reports its second-quarter results on Monday.

Car sales at Chrysler's Canadian arm fell 38.3 per cent, while truck sales soared 71.6 per cent.

GM Canada said its June sales were up 21.4 per cent to 23,917 vehicles. Car sales fell 15.8 per cent, while truck sales surged 61.1 per cent.

Including only its core brands -- Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac -- the automaker said sales were up 74.9 per cent in the month. GM is still in the process of restructuring and has discontinued several brands.

GM is expected to soon file for a stock offering, having emerged from bankruptcy protection last July with the help of governments in the United States and Canada.

Toyota, which had its reputation dented by a series of safety recalls that saw production of several popular models stalled in February, reported July sales of 14,882 vehicles, down 22.6 per cent from July 2009.

Honda Canada said its sales fell 11 per cent in July to 11,615 vehicles.

Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. said on Tuesday that its sales were up 9.7 per cent in July at 11,503 vehicles. It was the 18th month of year-over-year sales gains for the Korean automaker.

Google Maps teams up with Ford and GM -- The Detroit News 07/14/10

Drivers can now send Google Maps to their car's navigation system on select Ford and GM vehicles -- rather than printing paper directions.

Google, which started the send-to-car program more than three years ago, announced its latest partnerships with the two Michigan automakers today.

The Internet giant claims it's safer than reading direction from a piece of paper -- and better for the environment.

"Instead of going online to calculate a route and print it out, which looking at can be a distraction in the car, that address is simply sent to your car and you download the directions to it once you jump in your car to leave on the trip," Ford spokesman Alan Hall said in an e-mail to The Detroit News. "This isn't a replacement for our navigation system. It's an enhancement."
The feature is now available in more than 15 brands in the U.S.

Ford Profit 2Q 2010: Automaker Posts Huge Quarter On Brisk Sales

DEARBORN, Mich. â€” Four years ago, Ford mortgaged everything down to the blue oval logo to save itself. Now, even as Americans remain skittish about the economy, it's reaping big rewards and stealing business from stumbling rivals.

Ford said Friday that it made $2.6 billion from April through June, its fifth straight quarterly profit. The company, which reported record losses in 2008, now predicts it will end 2011 with more cash than debt.

With its two longtime Detroit rivals still finding their way after spending time in bankruptcy last year, Ford, which never took government bailout money, extended its success story.

President and CEO Alan Mulally said the company is ahead of where he thought it would be in its turnaround. It now sells the most popular pickup truck in the U.S., the F-Series, and the most popular crossover SUV, the Escape.

"Our performance this year gives us great confidence going forward," he said.

In the past year, Ford has gained a bigger share of the American market, the equivalent of about 154,000 cars and trucks. Rivals Toyota, General Motors and Chrysler have all lost ground.

Toyota stumbled this year because of safety-related recalls. GM and Chrysler's precarious financial positions had some people shying away from their cars.

Mulally, a tough manager masked by a boyish face and gee-whiz demeanor, joined Ford in October 2006, a year into a turnaround plan that called for closing plants, cutting jobs and dropping some of its models.

He removed obstacles, put new managers in place and forced feuding parts of the company to work together. He had cards printed out for every employee exhorting people to work together and accelerate development of new products â€“ and carries one in his own pocket. In weekly management meetings, he holds people accountable but also greets success with applause.

Michael Robinet, an analyst for the consulting firm IHS Automotive, credits Mulally with motivating the work force. But he said the biggest reason for Ford's success is a complete overhaul of its factory and sales strategies.

When the company was losing billions last decade, it kept cranking out cars and trucks even if they weren't selling, because high labor costs made it too expensive to shut down production.

But late in 2008, the United Auto Workers union gave up a provision known as the jobs bank, in which automakers had to pay laid-off workers even if their plants were closed.

Now, workers have to take jobs at other factories or risk losing wages and benefits. With 12 fewer factories and a North American work force that is half the 140,000 people it was five years ago, Ford can limit production when demand is slow.

"It's not about the moving metal any more. It's about moving the metal profitably," Robinet said.

Ford's leaner development system allows more of its cars and trucks to share parts. The new Fiesta subcompact, for example, will be sold around the world with only minor variations. And Ford plans to bring at least six vehicles from Europe to North America in the next few years, including a new Focus and the C-Max minivan.

High quality rankings from outside groups like Consumer Reports have also helped Ford command higher prices. The average selling price of a Ford last quarter was about $2,000 higher than a year earlier, according to Edmunds.com.

Ford Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth said the commitment to new and better products like the Ford Fusion sedan is the biggest factor in Ford's turnaround, allowing Ford to bring in more money while keeping costs competitive.

"If you've got great products, you can go to market in a sort of confident fashion," Booth said. "If you haven't, it's much tougher."

Ford's second-quarter revenue rose 14 percent to $31.3 billion. Its profit was 61 cents per share, 8 cents less than a year ago, when a big debt payment reduced Ford's interest payments.

Ford said it expects to make money for the next two years. Its stock rose 63 cents to $12.73. Ford shares fell as low as $1.26 in 2008. It's still a bargain, trading at about about seven times earnings. Toyota's ratio is more than 46.

Booth said Ford's first-half results surprised him and were better than the company expected at the start of the year. But he said Ford still must reduce debt and raise sales, particularly in fast-growing China and India, where it lags competitors.

Ford is also cautious about weaker demand for cars and trucks at home. It cut its forecast for total U.S. sales to between 11.5 million and 12 million on Friday. Earlier, it had predicted sales of up to 12.5 million.

Ford also held its third-quarter production forecast steady at 1.27 million cars and trucks worldwide, instead of raising production as it did in the second quarter.

Many analysts predict U.S. sales will continue to improve in 2011 and later. When they do, Ford is poised to rake in even more profit, Robinet said.

The 2010 Lincoln MKT with EcoBoostâ„¢ continues to provide better gas highway fuel economy â€“ 21 mpg â€“ than any other all-wheel-drive vehicle in its class.

For the 2011 MKX, engineers integrated the new 3.7-liter V6 engine, which uses twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to increase the vehicle's power and fuel economy. The broadened torque curve allows the intake valve to be advanced, delivering about a 10 percent power increase compared to non-Ti-VCT engines. Variable timing control of both the intake and exhaust camshafts helps extract more energy from each drop of fuel, leading to a 4.5 percent improvement in fuel economy.

The engine also employs a control strategy called aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff to save fuel. This strategy shuts off the engine when the driver doesn't need engine torque. It uses the momentum from the torque delivered to the transmission to move the vehicle, rather than more fuel.

"The 2011 Lincoln MKX will continue to propel the Lincoln lineup that is already ahead of the curve," Kuzak said.

The International Carwash Association reports that automatic car washes use less than half the water of even the most careful home car washer. Ford Adds Google Maps 'Send to SYNC' Service to Beam Driving Directions into Car; No Extra

DEARBORN -- Drivers who enjoy the convenience of Ford SYNCÂ® with Traffic, Directions & Information (TDI) soon will be able to select a destination on Google Maps and send it to their Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicles.

â€˜Send to SYNCâ€™ is a new capability added to the Ford Service Delivery Network, the companyâ€™s cloud-based architecture, which provides a suite of voice-activated services accessible through a customerâ€™s mobile phone.

â€œPrinting paper directions from a website is a relic in our digital age,â€ said Doug VanDagens, director of Ford Connected Services Solutions Organization. â€œWith Send to SYNC, you can map a destination at home, at work â€“ wherever you have connectivity â€“ and when you get to your car, it already knows where you want to go. Itâ€™s convenient and it eliminates the waste and distraction of paper maps, conserving resources while helping drivers keep their eyes on the road.â€

The SYNC TDI application leverages a customerâ€™s mobile phone voice plan and the vehicleâ€™s integrated GPS receiver to deliver location-based services, such as driving directions or business searches, and on-demand information such as horoscopes, news, movie listings and stock quotes. Since these services, including the new Send to SYNC functionality, are cloud-based, no vehicle updates are required and they will be available to all owners who have registered for TDI services through www.syncmyride.com.

When users visit Google Maps on the web to find locations, they will have the option to send a selected destination to their Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle via a â€œsendâ€ menu on the site. Once in the vehicle, the driver connects to SYNC TDI using the â€œServicesâ€ voice command, and when prompted, confirms the request to download the Google Maps destination into the vehicle.
The optimal route is calculated in the cloud using the latest traffic information, downloaded to the vehicle and navigation guidance begins. If the vehicle is equipped with a map-based navigation system, the destination point is downloaded directly to that system, which then calculates the route based on the in-vehicle navigation preferences set by the driver.

â€œOur cloud-based service network is helping deliver constant improvement for our customers, and has become a key reason why Ford leads the industry with SYNC,â€ said VanDagens. â€œWeâ€™re proud to be working with Google to bring this new capability to SYNC.â€

The Google Maps â€˜Send to SYNCâ€™ capability launches later this month. Ford is currently the only automaker offering this capability without requiring a paid subscription to a telematics service.
Ford previously announced the same feature for MapQuest (owned by AOL), which will launch later this year.

The basics of SmartGauge remain the same, with a pair of 4.3 LCD displays flanking a central speedometer. The LCDs can display several layers of information detail to help coach the driver to be a more efficient motorist.

The most obvious change the color palette for the LCD gauges. They have been changed from a predominantly blue scheme to what Lincoln officials describe as a more upscale-looking green and gold.

The leaves on the right of the display have been present since the introduction of system on the Fusion and provide a graphical representation of the short-term average fuel economy. The more thrifty your driving style, the more leaves you get. Behave like a lead-foot and they dissolve.

SmartGauge now also provides an indication of long-term efficiency. The flowers that are visible on the display are apple blossoms (the Michigan state flower). If your average mileage is sufficient (Ford won't say what kind of mileage you actually need), the first flowers will begin to appear after 4-6 weeks. The flowers first appear as buds and then grow into small and finally large flowers. More flowers appear over time but the more you get, the more time it will take to earn more.

Mercury
Mercury originally was created as a premium offering to Ford and was an important source of incremental sales. However, the continued strength of the Ford brand â€“ particularly during the past three years â€“ has accelerated the migration from Mercury to Ford for many customers.

Today, Mercuryâ€™s customer profile, pricing and margins are almost identical to Ford, but Mercuryâ€™s incremental sales have been declining.

The majority of current Mercury sales are to fleet buyers and customers purchasing through employee, retiree and friends and family discounts, which Ford anticipates largely can be satisfied by Ford brand vehicles.

Of Ford Motor Companyâ€™s 16 percent market share in the U.S., Mercury accounts for 0.8 percentage points, a level that has been flat or declining for the past several years. That contrasts with the Ford brand, which has increased market share by 2.2 percentage points so far this year on the strength of new products and improved quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value.

Fordâ€™s strengthening financial position â€“ including the return to profitability and positive cash flow â€“ allows the company to absorb short-term costs associated with the discontinuation of Mercury and to consolidate future product investments into Lincoln.

Today, there are no stand-alone Mercury dealerships in North America. Ford is working closely with dealers to maintain properly located stand-alone Lincoln or Ford-Lincoln dealers, which will offer dealers and the company the greatest opportunity for long-term profitable growth.

New operational standards developed with the companyâ€™s dealers will facilitate a Lincoln customer experience that exceeds the expectations of North American luxury customers.

Ford will work closely with Mercury dealers and customers during the transition, including providing existing Mercury owners with continued access to parts and service support at Ford and Lincoln dealers and by honoring current warranties, including Fordâ€™s Extended Service Plans.

Mercury owners will receive additional details in the coming days explaining the transition and assuring them that Ford and its dealers will continue to provide all necessary parts and service support for Mercury products.

Ford has notified Mercury dealers of the decision and provided details of a financial package that includes payment in exchange for resigning the franchise.

Ford today also informed dealers of special offers on new Mercury vehicles that will be available through the summer to support the sell down of current Mercury inventory and remaining Mercury vehicle production.

DEARBORN, Mich., May 20, 2010 – Ford Motor Company, building on its success in measuring and reducing its own carbon footprint, today announced plans to survey 35 top global suppliers on their energy use and estimated greenhouse gas emissions.

Ford's goal is to better understand the carbon footprint of its supply chain and use the data to eventually create a broad-based carbon management approach for its supply chain. The 35 suppliers represent close to 30 percent of Ford's $65 billion in annual procurement spending.

"Suppliers play an important role as we look to reduce our overall carbon footprint and drive more efficiency in an energy constrained world," said Tony Brown, Ford group vice president, Global Purchasing. "This initiative builds on our leadership in collaborating with suppliers and gives them a way to participate in solving an issue that faces our entire industry."

The suppliers in the initial request include companies that make commodities such as seats, steering systems, tires and metal components, which require more energy to produce and thus have a larger carbon footprint. While many of these suppliers already measure their greenhouse gas emissions, the project would facilitate collaboration and sharing of processes and practices that can drive significant emissions reductions and help meet future regulatory requirements.

"Climate change has the potential to affect all parts of our business, and is connected to other important issues – from water availability and energy security to human rights," said Susan Cischke, group vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. "Understanding the carbon footprint of our supply chain is a crucial part of our comprehensive global strategy to reduce greenhouse gases."

The data gathered from suppliers will be evaluated using modeling software from PTC InSight. Preliminary work Ford has done with PTC has indicated there are opportunities for both Ford and suppliers to reduce carbon emissions. Any reductions by suppliers would be in addition to Ford's own goal of reducing greenhouse gases 30 percent by 2020 from the company's 2006 model year baseline.

Several of Ford's top suppliers are already working to better understand their carbon emissions, including DuPont, TRW Automotive Holdings Corp., Bosch and Johnson Controls.

Johnson Controls, which supplies seats, interiors, electronics and batteries to Ford, is also working with the Carbon Disclosure Project and has goals in place to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"As a company, we are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2018, and are doing so through efficient manufacturing processes and the development of eco-friendly products," said Randy Leslie, vice president and general manager of the Ford Business Unit for Johnson Controls.

Johnson Controls also has a rating system that enables it to measure the sustainability activity of its own supply base.

As part of Ford's efforts to create a broad-based carbon management approach for its supply chain, they will share feedback from their data collection process with World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

The two organizations are leading a global collaboration of businesses, governments and non-governmental organizations to develop credible methods for measuring and reporting corporate greenhouse gas emissions. They are currently drafting a new standard to be used to measure indirect or Scope 3 emissions. In tandem, Ford is participating in the Carbon Disclosure Project Supply Chain Program. Ford is the only automaker participating in both initiatives.

Ford is also working with the Automotive Industry Action Group in developing guidelines for measuring supplier emissions. It is the intent of Ford to share their experience in measurement and reporting of corporate and supply chain emissions with the industry group in order to lead the industry to consistent and comparable emissions estimation methods.

Ford surpasses Toyota in brand loyalty

Dearborn -- Ford now has stronger customer loyalty than arch-rival Toyota, according to Consumer Reports.

The magazine said 61 percent of current Ford customers said they were likely to buy another Ford car or truck in a recent survey. That represented an increase of 10 percentage points over that last survey, conducted in February, and put the Ford's Motor Co. 's Blue Oval brand second to Honda Motor Co., which enjoys a 68 percent loyalty rate.

Toyota's brand loyalty has fallen 13 percentage points since December amid the largest recalls in the company's history.

General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC also continue to suffer in the wake of last year's bankruptcy filings. Chevrolet's loyalty rating slid from 57 percent in December to 49 percent in April, while Dodge fell from 32 percent to 24 percent

KBB Ranking: Ford Takes Over Top Spot

Toyota's problems took a big toll on the brand last quarter, while Ford gained from Toyota's loss. According to Kelley Blue Book's "Automotive Brand Indicator" (ABI), Ford was the top brand in opinion and consideration, followed by Toyota, Chevrolet, Honda, and Nissan.

In the Q4 '09 version of the ABI study, the top five were Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, Honda and Nissan. The study uses brand consideration data and perception ratings from KBB's Market Intelligence's Brand Watch study and slices and dices it with new-car shopper activity and leads data from kbb.com (some 15 million visits per month) to get brand strength measures.

Rick Wainschel, senior VP of marketing intelligence and brand strategy, explains that Toyota's drop, which began last year, could have been a lot worse. He says Toyota was a bit like a racer who is so far ahead of the pack that the pebble in its shoe merely evens the playing field.

"They basically lost a very large lead," he says. "Ford has been climbing, but what led to the reversal in the placement was more related to Toyota's decline than Ford's increase. They were very far ahead."

He says Toyota's position would also have been much worse if the study had only been for January and February and not March, when the automaker made big sales gains using incentives.

Wainschel adds that the study takes a more holistic approach to brand health than previous KBB efforts, as it now looks both at what consumers are thinking and what they are actually shopping.

Changes in the former aspect are slower trends, while the shopping-based data can change from week to week based on incentives, sales and the like. "We have over the years collected survey work regarding consideration and brand perception by segment. Those are attitudinal and survey-based. And we have been collecting click-stream data and trending for some years, as well as lead submissions."

The firm now uses all of that data to generate a statistical model of brand health. Also, per Wainschel, since an automaker's scores include shopping activity on KBB.com and lead generation to dealers, the size of an automaker's portfolio -- whether a brand sells both cars and trucks, SUVs and pickups, for example -- necessarily makes a difference.

"For a brand to be in the top, it has very strong consideration and brand perception and shopper activity in every category. Ford was strong in trucks and SUVs and weak in sedans until relatively recently. With Fusion and Taurus, they have made themselves a legitimate contender in sedans. Chevy is really strong in trucks and SUVs, not as strong in sedans." Hyundai saw big gains, rising from 11th place to sixth.

The luxury segment saw scores drop, not because of survey-based perception elements of the study but because of consideration. "It was driven by a drop in shopper activity and economics. People are much more in a mindset of need rather than want."

As for Toyota, "I think Toyota will be back in the number one spot in the second quarter. But the leadership mountain has gotten more crowded," he says.

Ford EcoBoost Satisfies Customers

DEARBORN -- Ford Motor Company’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine is not only bringing new, more affluent customers into Ford and Lincoln Mercury showrooms, it also is delivering some of the highest customer satisfaction scores for overall engine performance the company has ever seen.
“We are winning import buyers with EcoBoost,” says Amy Marentic, Ford’s North American group marketing manager for cars and crossovers. “Even better, this new customer is younger and more affluent.”

Drivers of EcoBoost vehicles say they are more than satisfied with the overall performance of their engines, according to the Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study conducted by the RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

In rating their EcoBoost engines, 100 percent of Lincoln MKT buyers surveyed said they were satisfied with their engine’s performance, including power and pickup.

Meanwhile, 99 percent said they were satisfied with their engine’s overall operation. Ninety-one percent of Lincoln MKS buyers were satisfied with their engine’s performance, while 94 percent were satisfied with their engine’s overall operation.

The GQRS study is conducted on a quarterly basis with scores assessed from survey responses collected from owners of vehicles purchased within specific time frames. New vehicle owners are asked to report any defects or issues, as well as rate their satisfaction with vehicle quality on a scale of 1 to 10 across an array of vehicle systems and features – including EcoBoost engines.

A growing fan base
Since August, Ford has sold more than 10,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles in North America. EcoBoost is available on the 3.5-liter V-6 offered in the Ford Taurus SHO and Ford Flex and on Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT.

The EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 combines direct injection, variable valve timing and twin turbochargers to deliver the power of a V-8 with the fuel consumption of a V-6. That combination – of which Ford holds more than 125 patents – is expanding the appeal of Ford and Lincoln products, Marentic said.

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine is built at Ford’s Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1. On Monday, Christina Romer, economic advisor to President Barack Obama, toured the plant with Ford officials.
Not only do consumers give EcoBoost high marks for performance, towing and overall operation, but demand for vehicles available with an EcoBoost engine continues to meet or exceed Ford’s internal sales expectations, said Marentic.

For example, calendar year sales of the Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost are running at 50 percent – 25 percent higher than projected. Flex sales this year also are running higher than projected, too.

Approximately 11 percent of Flex sales are with the EcoBoost engine, 3 percent higher than anticipated.
Last month at the Beijing Auto Show, Ford debuted the newest member of the EcoBoost family in the small Start concept. The Start’s engine is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder that delivers the performance of a 1.6-liter four.

In Europe, the first four-cylinder EcoBoost engines are just now being launched. The four-cylinder EcoBoost engine makes its North American debut late this year in the next-generation Explorer SUV and Edge crossover. Those vehicles will be available with an optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that is expected to deliver the performance of a V-6 but with best-in-class fuel economy.

By 2013, Ford plans to offer an EcoBoost engine in as much as 90 percent of its North American nameplates, which would deliver global sales of 1.5 million EcoBoost vehicles per year.

But parents can coach their teens on safe driving, make sure they know that drinking and driving is illegal, and find other ways to help them become more confident behind the wheel. The numbers show that the severity of a crash increases when alcohol is involved. In 2008, 22 percent of 15- to 20-year-old drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking.

Texting while driving is another area of concern. Ford research shows that teens do not have the experience that allows them to self-limit tasks while driving. NHTSA estimates that distracted driving, including the use of nomadic electronic devices, may be involved in some capacity in up to 80 percent of road collisions.

 Buckle up! Remind your teenager again and again how important that single little click can be. Statistics show that seat belt usage is lowest among teenagers, even though seat belts continue to be proven as the No. 1 life-saving device in accidents.

 Don't drink and drive. You may assume your teen knows this, but it's worth a sit-down talk. Make sure your teen knows the dangers of driving under the influence – or getting into a vehicle with someone who's been drinking.

 No text zone. Remind your teen driver to avoid distractions such as texting, loud music and any activities that take their eyes away from the road for extended periods of time. Research shows this combination significantly increases the risk of accidents.

 Take a drive. Is your son or daughter taking the car that night? Drive the route with him or her; make sure they know exactly where they're going and limit the number of passengers who will be in the car at all times.

 Renting a limo? Check the safety record of the limo company. Make sure the company you (or the kids) are renting from has a reputable history.

 Set a check-in time and curfew. Have the couple call you when the dance is over, or when they're changing venues, so you know where they are at all times. Set a curfew. Make sure your teens know when you expect them home, and make sure they know it's not debatable.

Ford is Making Greener Vehicles through Increased Use of Renewable and Recyclable Materials

DEARBORN -- Ford is making its vehicles more eco-friendly through increased use of renewable and recyclable materials such as the soy and bio-based seat cushions and seatbacks on the 2010 Ford Taurus.

Ford vehicles are now 85 percent recyclable by weight. In 2009, Ford saved approximately $4.5 million by using recycled materials, and diverted between 25 and 30 million pounds of plastic from landfills in North America alone.

“By increasing the use of recycled or renewable content and reducing the use of undesirable materials whenever possible, we’re helping to reduce waste to landfills by millions of pounds – and we’re doing it around the world,” said John Viera, Ford’s director of Sustainability and Environmental Policy. “More than ever before, the spirit of ONE Ford that drives our global product strategy also drives our commitment to sustainability.”

The 2010 Ford Taurus is the eleventh Ford vehicle to feature earth-friendly bio-based seat cushions and seatbacks. Ford has more vehicle models with seats that use soy and other bio-based foams than any other automaker. Ford Mustang, F-150, Focus, Flex, Escape, Expedition and Econoline as well as Mercury Mariner, Lincoln MKS and Navigator also use the sustainable material.

“We already have bio-based foam on more than 2 million vehicles and we’re looking to convert 100 percent of our fleet to it in the future,” said Jerry Brown, Ford chief engineer of seat and restraint engineering. “This is just one way that Ford is advancing the use of eco-friendly materials in the industry.”

Ford’s “reduce, reuse and recycle” commitments are part of the company’s broader global sustainability strategy to reduce its environmental footprint while accelerating the development of advanced fuel-efficient vehicle technologies around the world.

Building in green materials
For the past several years, Ford has concentrated on increasing the use of non-metal recycled and bio-based materials, including:

 Bio-based (such as soy) polyurethane foams on the seat cushions, seatbacks and headliners on 11 vehicle models. The 2 million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles on the road today with bio-foam seats equates to a reduction in petroleum oil usage of approximately 1.5 million pounds

 Post-consumer recycled resins such as detergent bottles, tires and battery casings used to make underbody systems, such as aerodynamic shields, splash shields and radiator air deflector shields. The latest example is the engine cam cover on the 3.0-liter V-6 2010 Ford Escape. As a result, Ford has diverted between 25 and 30 million pounds of plastic from landfills

 Post-industrial recycled yarns for seat fabrics on vehicles such as the Ford Escape and Escape Hybrid. A 100 percent usage of recycled yarns can mean a 64 percent reduction in energy consumption and a 60 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the use of new yarns

 Repurposed nylon carpeting made into nylon resin and molded into cylinder head covers for Ford’s 3.0-liter Duratec® engine. The industry’s first eco-friendly cylinder head cover is used in the 2010 Ford Fusion and Escape

 The automotive industry’s first application of wheat straw-reinforced plastic for the third-row storage bins of the 2010 Ford Flex. The natural fiber replaces energy-inefficient glass fibers commonly used to reinforce plastic parts

In support of Ford’s global product development strategy, material engineers are developing standardized specifications for sustainable materials while working with parts purchasers and suppliers to use eco-friendly components in different markets.

For example, the European Ford Focus uses recycled polymer in such components as the battery tray, wheel arch liners, seat fabric and carpets. Materials engineers are in the process of determining if recycled polymer can be used for similar components in the global Focus coming to North America and Europe in 2011.

“Sustainable materials need to meet the same high standards for quality, durability and performance as virgin material; there can be no compromise on product quality,” said Valentina Cerato, Ford materials engineer in Europe.

What the future holds
Materials researchers continue to explore sustainable material applications, such as an eco-friendly replacement for the fiberglass used between the headliner and roof sheet metal that will be bio-based, lighter weight, and will deliver improved acoustics and neutralize odor.
In addition, Ford researchers are developing natural-fiber composites as a potential substitute for the glass fibers traditionally used in plastic car parts to make them stronger while reducing vehicle weight, which helps improve fuel economy and reduces emissions. Natural fiber composites also are more eco-friendly, because their production and end-of-life incineration are less energy intensive than glass fibers, which also results in lower emissions.

Ford researchers also are investigating ways to use plastics made entirely from sustainable resources such as corn, sugar beets, sweet potatoes and other vegetables. These renewable materials will help reduce dependency on petroleum, reduce CO2 emissions and allow the composting of the material at the end of a vehicle’s life.

“Natural fiber-reinforced plastics and plant-based polymer resins help reduce CO2 emissions by being entirely compostable, and in some cases reduce weight, which helps improve fuel economy,” said Debbie Mielewski, technical leader, Ford Plastics Research. “We have to entertain the thought of bio-replacement in baby steps, looking at every aspect of a car that could be green. One day I hope to see the world of automotive plastics go totally compostable, removing petroleum by 100 percent.”

What comes out
Automobiles are among the most recycled consumer products in the world. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more than 95 percent of all end-of-life vehicles in the U.S. are processed for recycling – compared to 52 percent of all paper and 31 percent of all plastic soft drink bottles.

In Europe, automakers are required to take back the vehicles they’ve produced at the end of the vehicles’ useful lives. Ford has end-of-life recycling networks for its vehicles in 16 European markets and participates in industry collective systems in another 10. In 2007, Ford became one of the first automakers in Europe to be certified in compliance with end-of-life requirements, including:

 Design and produce vehicles that facilitate the dismantling, reuse, recovery and recycling of them at end-of-life

 Reduce the use of hazardous substances when designing vehicles

 Increase the use of recycled materials in vehicle manufacture

 Ensure that parts do not contain mercury, hexavalent chromium, cadmium or lead

Reuse is a big part of the recycling story. Auto recyclers supply more than one third of all ferrous scrap to the U.S. scrap processing industry. When manufacturers use scrap iron and steel instead of newly produced ore, they reduce air and water pollution by more than half during the manufacturing process.

“In theory, end-of-life vehicles are nearly 100 percent recoverable. In practice, however, the cost in energy and labor to recover all vehicle material often exceeds the value of the materials and offers insignificant value to the environment,” Viera said. “We remain focused on achieving the highest economically viable and environmentally sound recovery percentage possible

DEARBORN – Customer satisfaction with Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles increased four points to 84 percent and now leads all full-line manufacturers, according to the latest U.S. quality study by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. The first-quarter 2010 Global Quality Research System (GQRS) survey of customers also showed that Ford has an unsurpassed level of things-gone-wrong among full-line manufacturers. Ford's steadily improving quality and customer satisfaction are translating to stronger metrics throughout the purchase funnel. Based on the Quarter 1 2010 Brand Equity and Awareness Tracking (BEAT) study by Morpace of Farmington Hills, Mich., the Ford brand is now comparable to Toyota for Consideration, Shopping and Intention, and leads Toyota and Honda in Intended Loyalty.

Stable perceptions of Lincoln's year-on-year performance helped it achieve best results versus Lexus. While Mercury year-on-year performance remained stable, cross-consideration of the brand is growing as customer interaction between Mercury and competitive brands increases.

Stronger brand perception is having a significant impact in dealer showrooms. In March, sales of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles jumped 43 percent, matching a similar increase in February. In addition, the company has gained retail share in 17 of the last 18 months.

"People are discovering that the Ford difference is the strength of our fresh new product lineup, especially our leadership in quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart technologies and value," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing Sales and Service.

NEW YORK, April 9, 2010 – A new Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) study lends further evidence that voice-controlled Ford SYNC® helps drivers minimize electronics-related visual distractions compared to manually operating hand-held cell phones and music.

The study by VTTI – to be released April 15 in Detroit at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress during a panel discussion titled “Human Factors in Driving and Automotive Telematics” – supports the Institute’s growing body of research on driver distraction and as well as a similar Ford study in 2009.

In the new Ford-commissioned VTTI study, 21 drivers – age 19 to 51 who were familiar with SYNC – drove a Mercury Mariner while initiating a call, selecting music tracks and having phone conversations using the hands-free, voice controlled system. For the purpose of comparison, the participants also completed the same tasks manually using their own mobile phones and portable music players in the same vehicle.

The study concluded that drivers were able to dial and complete other tasks more quickly and with less time eyes-off-road time when using SYNC. At the same time, drivers manually operating phones and digital music players steered more erratically and looked away from the roadway for longer periods of time.

“This study suggests that keeping drivers’ eyes on the road as much as possible is important for maintaining safe vehicle control, which is in line with recent naturalistic driving research,” said Shane McLaughlin, Research Scientist, Center for Automotive Safety Research, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.

When study participants initiated a call, hand-held operation required more than 2.5 times as many glances away from the road and more than 4 times longer in total eyes-off-road time than when drivers used SYNC. For MP3 player song selection, hand-held operation required more than 6 times as many task-related glances than SYNC, and took more than 10 times longer in total eyes-off-road time.

“We know that people are going to have phone conversations and listen to music while they drive, and this research backs up what most of us instinctively know – that while driving, it is better to place a call or select a song using a voice interface instead of doing it manually,” said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering.

Real-world results
VTTI’s new study is consistent with the groundbreaking “100-Car Naturalistic Driving Study”, completed in 2005 for the U.S. Department of Transportation. The study followed 109 drivers for one year and tracked more than 42,300 hours of driving data collected with over 2 million miles driven.

The 100-Car Study concluded that manually dialing a hand-held device while driving – a task that requires looking away from the road –was almost 2.8 times riskier than normal driving. The study also showed that talking and listening on a phone while driving has a similar risk to normal driving.

“VTTI’s real-world and controlled study results indicate that SYNC’s voice interface offers substantial advantages compared to manually using a hand-held device to do the same task,” said Dr. Louis Tijerina, Ford senior technical specialist.

The twin-turbocharged, direct-injection 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 delivers the horsepower of a normally aspirated V8 with the fuel efficiency of a normally aspirated V6.*

What is EcoBoost™?

The power of a V8 and the fuel economy of a V6 – that’s what EcoBoost delivers. How is this achieved?

V8 power: The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine features the enhanced performance of twin turbochargers. Power ratings are 355 horsepower (2010 Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and MKT), 365 horsepower (2010 Taurus SHO), and 350 lb.-ft. of torque (all models).

V6 economy: The EcoBoost engine features the efficiency of direct-injection (DI) technology and is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission calibrated for high low-end torque plus increased fuel economy at the higher overdrive gear. Also, the power steering system uses efficient electric actuation rather than a conventional belt accessory drive that draws power from the engine, even when the steering system is not being used.

High quality and durability.

To ensure the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine delivers quality performance, a team of engineers subjected it to an extensive battery of tests as part of the company’s engine “boot camp.”

The extensive testing to prove out the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine was accomplished through three avenues – using computer-aided engineering (CAE) models, in the lab with dynamometers, and on actual roads. Between tests on the dynamometer and in the field, EcoBoost engines have racked up the equivalent of more than 1 million miles of customer driving.

The rigid testing includes 20 individual dynamometer-level tests designed to push the engine to its limits. The testing protocol verifies the reliability of the complete engine system under maximum engine speeds and loads, coolant and oil temperature and customer driving patterns.

The road cycle durability test, for example, is designed to replicate real-world customer driving and vehicle maintenance patterns. For this test, engines with EcoBoost technology were subjected to 1,000 cold starts, along with sustained operation at peak torque and peak power. During the course of the test, engine coolant temperatures ranged from 12 degrees Celsius (about 53 degrees Fahrenheit) to 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit). In total, this single test required 1,000 hours of extreme engine operation, representing more than 60,000 miles of extreme customer driving.

Individual components underwent rigorous proving as well. EcoBoost’s twin turbochargers, for example, are designed to run at a very high temperature – up to 950 degrees Celsius (1,740 degrees Fahrenheit). Ford engineers proved out the turbochargers by running them at 950 degrees Celsius at maximum boost for 10 minutes and then “shocking” the turbos by running them at room temperature for 10 minutes. The tests were repeated continuously for hundreds of hours, under far more severe conditions than customers are expected to dish out.

Designed for a life cycle of greater than 150,000 miles or 10 years, EcoBoost’s turbochargers feature water-cooled bearing jackets. This architecture is designed to prevent oil “coking” that could occur in previous-generation turbochargers. The new design means that EcoBoost drivers don’t need to observe special operating precautions, such as idling the engine before switching it off.

EcoBoost also endured Ford’s standard engine durability test signoff, running at maximum revs and turbo boost for the equivalent of 15 straight days or 360 hours.

EcoBoost will be arriving this summer in the 2010 Lincoln MKS and MKT and the 2010 Ford Flex and Taurus SHO models – the first in a wave of EcoBoost engines coming as part of Ford’s strategy to bring affordable fuel efficiency improvements to millions.
